Hijri to Gregorian

About the Hijri calendar

The Hijri (Islamic lunar) calendar is based on the Moon’s cycle around the Earth. It started in the year of the Prophet Muhammad’s migration from Mecca to Medina (622 CE). It has 12 lunar months, and a Hijri year is about 354–355 days.

The twelve Hijri months:

  1. Muharram
  2. Safar
  3. Rabi al-Awwal
  4. Rabi al-Thani
  5. Jumada al-Awwal
  6. Jumada al-Thani
  1. Rajab
  2. Sha’ban
  3. Ramadan
  4. Shawwal
  5. Dhu al-Qi’dah
  6. Dhu al-Hijjah

The difference between the Hijri and Gregorian calendars:

The Gregorian calendar is solar, with 365–366 days per year, while the Hijri is lunar with 354–355 days. The ~11-day yearly difference makes Hijri months drift across the Gregorian year over time.

When do you need date conversion?

There are many cases where you need to convert between Hijri and Gregorian:

1. Preparing your resume

When applying for jobs in Saudi Arabia and some Gulf countries, birth and graduation dates may be required in Hijri. Prepare a professional resume with both calendars.

2. Calculating work durations

In Saudi Arabia, end-of-service gratuity and leave are calculated using the Hijri calendar, so conversion helps you know your actual duration.

3. Official and legal documents

Many documents in Arab countries record both dates, so conversion helps when submitting or renewing official paperwork.

4. Working out religious occasions

To find the Gregorian dates of Ramadan, the two Eids, Hajj and Mawlid — or the other way around.

5. Calculating age in Hijri

Many older people know their birth date in Hijri, and you may need to convert it when filling Gregorian forms.
